What is Cryosurgery?
Cervical cryotherapy is an in office treatment option for cervical dysplasia (precancer). A speculum is placed and a quarter-sized probe is placed against the cervix. Liquid nitrogen flows through the probe thereby freezing the cervix and destroying the abnormal cells. The procedure takes about ten minutes to perform. There is some cramping which improves during the procedure. Afterwards the patient will have a heavy clear discharge that will require the use of pantyliners for two-three weeks. The discharge is from the abnormal cells being sloughed off and the new healthy cells growing back. The patient should abstain from intercourse, tampons or douching until seeing the doctor at a follow up appointment in two weeks. This procedure is 90% effective in getting rid of the dysplasia. A repeat Pap test would be performed in six months.
